6 important things to note before using the fetal doppler
1. Using the doppler does not replace your hospital appointments. Always make sure you don’t miss your hospital appointments and scans during pregnancy.
2. Apply coconut oil as a lubricant generously on your belly before using the doppler so as to pick the sounds faster.
3. Take a comfortable reclined position when you want to use the doppler. You can lie down on your bed.
4. Once you start using it, use the probe to search for where the sound is loud and clear. You can hear the sound from 16 weeks of pregnancy.
5. When you start listening for your baby’s heartbeat, the probe (stick-like part) should be stable on the spot of interest for atleast 20 SECONDS and you listen to know what kind of sound it makes. Don’t take the reading until the probe has stayed on the spot where you are getting a clear sound for atleast 20 sec. You can reduce or increase the volume on the machine.
6. You may hear 3 sounds from the doppler when using it (your baby’s heartbeat, your own heartbeat and sound from your placenta swooshing around). The sound you are looking for is your baby’s heartbeat and this is how to differentiate
a. Your baby’s heartbeat: This will be between 110 to 150. It is faster than an adult’s heartbeat. It will sound like a horse galloping.
b. Your own heartbeat: This will be between 60 to 100. Not as fast as a baby’s heartbeat but much more steady. If you hear this, keep searching for your baby’s heartbeat.
c. Your placenta: slow and has a swooshing sound. Not your baby’s heartbeat
